Environmental Policy and Carbon Reduction Plan
Mission statement
Create Clarity is a net positive organisation. This means that not only is Create Clarity carbon neutral, we will, through our activities, seek to reduce the carbon emissions and environmental impact generated by our clients, suppliers and partners. We will do this through reducing our own footprint to an absolute minimum (including in our limited supply chain), offset the residue and only accept client work that will have a neutral or positive social and/or environmental impact.
Responsibility
Dawn Mulvey, Director of Create Clarity, is responsible for ensuring that the environmental policy is implemented. However, all members of our team have a responsibility in their area to ensure that the aims and objectives of the policy are met.
Policy aims
Using an FY2021 baseline, we will:
Adopt a policy of triple offsetting our impact and will always be carbon neutral as an organisation. If our carbon footprint increases, we will offset it accordingly.
Never make a decision that will have a direct negative impact on society or the environment
Increase internal awareness and build a culture that reflects these values
Putting our policy into action:
Create Clarity’s business is knowledge management; the vast majority of the materials we deal with (both inputs and deliverables) are electronic and as such we have more limited impact on the environment (over any other business or consumer). Nevertheless, we are passionate about reducing our carbon footprint, wherever possible.
There are two main areas where our business will have an environmental impact:
Office
100% renewable electricity (REGO regulated).
Reduced energy use: low energy lighting (LED), maximising natural light and more energy efficient mechanical upgrades.
Solar panels will be fitted by the end of 2022
It is an employee requirement to reduce energy use wherever possible: switch off lights and computers when not in use, minimal water when boiling kettles; use of air conditioning restricted to very hot periods (otherwise windows are opened)
Recycling: there is a 90% recycling target to reduce landfill. Composting bins are also being investigated.
Commitment to zero waste: to avoid single-use packaging wherever possible, and using recycling facilities otherwise.
In accordance with our security policies, we do not print anything unless absolutely necessary.
We ensure that our office supplier will only use licensed and appropriate organisations to dispose of waste.
We have indoor plants on all desks to mitigate carbon dioxide in the environment.
We use non-toxic cleaning products.
Travel
Our use of communication technology means that we are able to restrict our travel purchasing to those occasions where it has a strong business benefit, and we always choose train travel over flying where possible.
Sustainable commutes: showers and cycle storage provided
Carbon Off-setting
Create Clarity measure their carbon footprint using tools provided by the Carbon Trust. For the full year ending December 2021, our total emissions are calculated as 8,700 kgCO2e. This figure has been tripled and off-set through a donation to the Woodland Trust.
Environmental Assurance:
Environmental Considerations is a fixed agenda item at Board meetings, and we are constantly investigating further methods we could use, and how these can be implemented across the business. For example, the energy consumption and efficiency of new products will be a key consideration when purchasing decision are being made. We update this policy at least once annually in consultation with our management team and other stakeholders (which include our clients, contractors and relevant suppliers).
We are also committed to ensuring that our suppliers follow similar good practices. Our policy with respect to the environmental impact of our suppliers may be found within our Sustainable Procurement Policy.
Training and information on environmental practices is provided to staff – and where possible our contractors – as new information and practices are acquired.
Carbon Reduction Plan
Create Clarity is a net positive organisation. This status is carefully reviewed, monitored, and maintained. Our baseline carbon emissions figures for 2021 are provided below. We commit to triple offsetting our emissions.
Scope 3 emissions will be calculated for 2022.
Document Control
This document will be reviewed annually as a minimum, with updated carbon emissions figures added each year to track progress.
